Yoga + Essential Oils- How to enhance your Practice

How to Enhance Your Yoga Practice with
Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils
By: Allison Petroski

Essential oils and plants have been a part of spiritual practices since the beginning of time. Frankincense and myrrh, for example, have a long standing history in ancient traditions such as Ayurveda, Chinese Medicine, and African healing. They are mentioned repeatedly in the Bible and were used in ancient Greece and Egypt. The medicinal benefits of therapeutic grade essential oils are limitless, but what I find to be one of the most fascinating qualities is that they carry their own, often very elevated, frequency, which can greatly improve your physical, emotional, and spiritual well being. Therapeutic essential oils have the highest known electromagnetic frequency in any natural substance known to man. Starting at 52 MHz they escalate up to 320MHz, which is what pure rose oil resonates at. When you combine these highly charged oils with yoga and meditation, your practice can be greatly enhanced.

Therapeutic grade essential oils can be applied topically or inhaled to increase energy, relaxation, and focus, or to decrease stress and deepen meditation. This applies only to therapeutic grade oils, which only make up 2% of the oils available on the market. It does not include the oils found in health food stores and perfumeries, despite the claims of purity found on many labels. In this article I am referring to Young Living Essential Oils. Both Yoga Journal and yoga master Rodney Yee are working with Young Living to educate people on the power of therapeutic grade essential oils.

When therapeutic grade essential oils are inhaled the miniscule molecules travel up the nasal passages, into the lungs, and into the blood stream, oxygenating the blood. The aromatic molecules of the oils also reach the amygdala, a component of the limbic system where emotion, instinct, memory and vital functions are controlled. Oils high in certain chemical constituents can reprogram cells and stimulate emotional release. Below is a brief outline of suggested ways to implement essential oils into your practice.

Oils and Yoga
Before Practice-
Start by diffusing your favorite oils in the air with a cool-air diffuser. Lemon, peppermint, and/or lavender will purify the air and enhance physical stamina, while decreasing stress. These will also keep your studio germ free as lemon and peppermint are anti-viral, anti-microbial, and anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal.

Balance your chakras and ground yourself-
Place a few drops of lavender on your sacrum and on the bottom of your feet to bring harmony to your chakras. Rosemary opens the chakras. Sandalwood harmonizes and balances the emotions and enhances meditation by opening the third eye. Vetiver and Cedarwood are very grounding.

Pranayama, Meditation, and Yoga-
Place a few drops of frankincense in the center of your palms and rub them together. Cup your hands over your nose and inhale deeply for several breaths. Place a drop over your third eye and at the base of your skull to increase focus to these two powerful energy points. You can also rub a few drops at the base of your nostrils for continual inhalation. Frankincense and sandalwood are both very high in sesquiterpenes, a chemical constituent which aides in removing negative programming and increases oxygen to the pineal and pituitary glands providing a deeper meditation.

Inhaling peppermint oil is also very invigorating and will open the nasal passages and lungs for a very clear breathing experience, allowing more oxygen into the blood stream. Use peppermint sparingly and before the other oils, as it is a strong oil that will overpower the lighter scents of frankincense and sandalwood. On its own it is wonderfully soothing to any digestive issues, headaches, and muscle aches.

Any of these oils will greatly enhance breathing techniques. After you have finished your breathing exercises you can add more oil to any of the spots that were mentioned, and continue on with your meditation or yoga practice. You cannot overdose on therapeutic essential oils- so keep putting them on!

Essential Oils and Chakras
Frankincense, sandalwood, and lavender are three oils that are both grounding and highly spiritual. All three can be used on any of the energy centers for balancing, clearing, and enhancing the qualities of the individual chakra.

After Your Practice-
Lavender and peppermint oils may help alleviate muscle soreness and tension. Due to the regenerative nature of essential oils, applying them during and after your practice will help keep your muscles and joints limber and provide the ability to heal faster if any damage does occur.

I have touched on just a few ways that essential oils can elevate your frequency and improve your spiritual practice. Once you begin exploring the realm of essential oils yourself, you will discover the unlimited potential of nature’s living energy.

Full Moon Night

Full moon, silent night, drifting tides
In the inner silence the truth lies.
Becoming as still as the surrounding trees
that dance so swiftly amongst the slight breeze.

I find harmony, my own little paradise from reality
No need to prove or push
Letting God be the leader and guide

There comes a rest that allows ones purpose to unfold
like petals of a cosmic mandala one comes to be known.

Not for knowledge they possess, but a way of living the resonates with the best.
No need to qualify, or transgress, finding peace amongst the city unrest.

There as the waves pound the shore, and then receding back into the core.
Like a heart that beat it rhythms, bringing life to all parts.
Recognizing we are not apart but part of a greater whole.
Born here to serve the ultimate, not just ourselves.

Full moon, quiet night, drifting tides
How you remind me of the peace that recides
deep within my core, showing me if I dive deep the waves will not rock me.
When I listen, how true wisdom unfolds
And I become the vessel for which I was born.

Yet, in my ignorance, I flee.
I toss myself in destructive tendencies to hide from reality,
from my potential and all the beauty that is within me.
Terrified of the light that I was born to shine.
I have forgotten and run to what seems warm.
Only to spiral down.
It is in my habits that I lose the choice and become a repeat of the past.
Rather than a governing body that knows fear is only a test.
It is in the unknown that I become known.

Show me with your brightest light, that radiates from the moon,
how to ease myself back into your womb
So we may never separate and I will be that still serenity,
Which leads me back to you.

The Best Teacher is YOU

“By choosing to see things as a teacher I respond with respect.”

Everything is a teacher. From the speck of sand, to the vines growing on a delapitated building, to your worst enemy.
Nothing escapes the realm of experience and from experience comes wisdom.
I can choose to perceive something as a challenge or I can see it as a threat. It all comes from the perspective I am living in.

By choosing to see things as a teacher I respond with respect.
No longer judging, criticizing, rather, accepting and moving forward with appropriate action.
Despair arises in life when we question ‘Why is this happening to me?”.
My response ” Why not?”.
You are being given a perfect opportunity to have a victory. To rise above your advisories and learn something new.
If you knew everything, nothing would happen to you, because you would know.

The Earth is a playground of education. It is where we come to settle our accounts and learn from past mistakes so they are not repeated again.

If you have patterns, your not learning. You are repeating.
Change your response, change your life.
It really is that simple. If you want to get out of the same repetitive cycles, than act different and you will have a different response.
We are so used to responding in the same manner we don’t even realize we are doing it.
Try responding with love and kindness and see how an open heart is the best defense..

Become devoted to learning, make your prayer to elevate yourself under all circumstances.
Become that which you wish to see in the world as Gandhi would say.
Be a student of yourself, and life itself.

Be Fearless- Meditation

We all have fear.

images

Its biological, its nature and its a protective mechanism of the mind that tries to guard us from potential issues.

It tries to warn us, but the real problem is when fear takes over our lives. When we are balanced and neutral we are able to discriminate real threats. But when we are stressed, overworked, tired, our fear mind goes into overdrive. We don’t see reality as it is, and we become a victim to fear.

Unfortunately, in our world there are people that create fear for profit. This leads to fear being spread widely; and fear is contagious! If there is an a little bit of doubt within you and someone with fear comes around.. you are going to be affected… Its like a virus, but the immunity is through meditation and keeping your body balanced and healthy.

I want to share a meditation with you that will help you over come fear.

Kriya for Removing Fear of The Future

Unknown.jpg

This meditation clears the fear of the future and connects to the flow of life through the heart center.

Posture & Mudra: Sit comfortably in Easy Pose. Rest the back of the left hand in the palm of the right hand. The right thumb nestles in the palm of the left hand and the left thumb crosses it. The fingers of the right hand curve around the outside of the left hand and hold it gently. Holding your hands in this way will give you a peaceful, secure feeling. Put this mudra at your Heart Center with the palm-side resting against your chest. Meditate to your favorite version of Dhan, Dhan, Ram Das Gur. Start with 11 minutes and slowly and gradually work up to 31 minutes of practice time.

To End: Inhale deeply and relax.

Comments: This meditation takes away your fears of the future which have been created by your subconscious memories of the past. It will force you to deal with your Heart Center. The beauty in you is your spirit.

The strength in you is your endurance. The intelligence in you is your vastness. – Yogi Bhajan

The meditation will help to create a neutral space. But to finalize the process. We must bust through fear ! Action in Motion!

Every time we give into fear it gets stronger. Every time we act in spite of it – Courage- we move towards the state of FEARLESSNESS.

If your scared, jump! Because that is when you are truly living. We are afraid because we don’t know what will happen, but its in the UNKNOWN that we grow/ evolve. If we rotate in our habits we will just be our habits. If we step up and out of it, we enter into a space of Creativity, of pure potential and unlimited opportunity.

So if your scared, have fear. ACKNOWLEDGE IT.. but don’t let it own you. Jump and let the Universe catch you. There is so many amazing gifts waiting!
